I began drawing during a second pregnancy, when “words were missing,” as Anne Carson writes at the beginning of Short Talks, in reference to something else. The numbers of gestational weeks (both of my sons were born at 38) provided a graph, within which data could be more aleatory. Marking a page like that–a plot, a jolt, something measured, something rushed or felt–became a way of being with a stranger, of writing to, without writing with words a fetus wouldn’t need to understand. Copies of some of these were printed in basic research.
